Wells Gray Search and Rescue generally recruits for new ground search and rescue members annually. Looks for notifications during the late summer for ground search and rescue course start up information.
Regular members are expected to commit to a minimum equivalent of 12 training sessions each year.
Interested parties need to complete an application and fill out an information sheet. A Criminal Record Check and an interview with WGSAR executive are required. SAR members must be 19 years of age or 16–18 years of age with the permission of a parent or guardian. Basic outdoor skills, including back country navigation and the ability to travel safely outdoors at any time and in any weather are an advantage but are also included in the training program. A valid OFA1 or higher first aid certificate is required for Ground Search and Rescue qualification. This training is provided by WGSAR.
Knowledge of local trails, routes and recreation areas is an important asset as well as a volunteering spirit and commitment to community service. Volunteers must have a work and family life that will allow them to train and respond to callouts. Qualified Ground Search and Rescue volunteers are considered unpaid professionals in British Columbia and are expected to provide their own gear.
Wells Gray SAR accepts application to attend a Ground Search and Rescue certification course. This course involves 90 plus hours of training which will typically take up to six months to complete. GSAR certification is assessed by the Justice Institute of British Columbia.
Additional training for GSAR qualified volunteers is available in specialized areas including search management, swift water, avalanche, tracking, ice rescue and rope rescue.
